The Story Behind the Print

Blue and Hairstreak Butterflies | Scudder 1889

Eastern Tailed-Blue and azure complex appear on plate 6 of Samuel Hubbard Scudder's The Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada (1889). Small blues and hairstreaks form a delicate specimen study with understated color.

This butterfly plate has a centered composition, balanced borders and a continuous warm paper field. It pairs naturally with other plates in Scudder's series.

Sizes and Frames

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
