The Story Behind the Print
This vintage American Crossbill print reproduces plate 197 from John James Audubon's nineteenth-century Birds of America. Seven crossbills gather among sweeping conifer branches, delicate needles and hanging cones. Their red, olive and pale plumage gives the intricate group its varied rhythm.
A red bird and an olive bird face one another near the top, while five others perch or turn among the lower branches. The crossed bills, original No 40 and PLATE CXCVII marks, American Crossbill and LOXIA CURVIROSTRA caption, figure labels, and Audubon/Havell credits remain visible. Warm historic paper and a faint plate impression are preserved.
