The Story Behind the Print

Fritillary and Checkerspot Caterpillars | Scudder 1889

Fritillary, Baltimore Checkerspot and Pearl Crescent larvae appear on plate 75 of Samuel Hubbard Scudder's The Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada (1889). Dark spines, green larvae and plant fragments gather around a strong vertical stem.

This caterpillar plate has a centered composition, balanced borders and a continuous warm paper field. It pairs naturally with other plates in Scudder's series.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
