The Story Behind the Print

Monarch and Admiral Caterpillars | Scudder 1889

Monarch, Viceroy, Mourning Cloak and Red Admiral larvae appear on plate 74 of Samuel Hubbard Scudder's The Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada (1889). Caterpillars of many sizes mingle with botanical fragments in a richly detailed stage study.

This caterpillar plate has a centered composition, balanced borders and a continuous warm paper field. It pairs naturally with other plates in Scudder's series.

Sizes and Frames

Choose 8 x 12 or 10 x 15 inches, either Print Only or professionally framed in Satin Black, Slimwood Silver, or Slimwood Gold. Sizes refer to the paper artwork; a frame adds to the outside dimensions. Framed options have no mat and arrive ready to hang. Display props are not included.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
