The Story Behind the Print
This vintage Red-Throated Diver print reproduces plate 202 from John James Audubon's nineteenth-century Birds of America, prepared as historical wall art for studies, libraries and natural-history gallery walls.
Four diver figures are shown beside and in the water, from a tall black-and-white bird on the rocky bank to a dark young bird and two swimmers with red eyes. One bird carries the distinctive rust-red throat, while reeds and pitcher plants frame the group. The original caption names the Red-throated Diver, Colymbus septentrionalis, and distinguishes summer and winter plumage, an adult female and a young bird.

About the Frame
