The Story Behind the Print
This Red-breasted Snipe bird print reproduces plate 335 from John James Audubon's nineteenth-century Birds of America. Two shorebirds stand beside the water on a low, rocky bank.
The bird at the right raises its long bill above a warm reddish breast, while its gray companion bends toward the shore. Fine wing markings, greenish legs and a softly painted blue sky give the pair contrasting seasonal character. The original No. 67, Plate CCCXXXV, Red-breasted Snipe title, historical Latin name, plumage labels and engraved credits remain visible.

About the Frame
