The Story Behind the Print
Skipper Caterpillars | Scudder 1889
Assorted skipper larvae appear on plate 77 of Samuel Hubbard Scudder's The Butterflies of the Eastern United States and Canada (1889). A spacious arrangement of green larvae and foliage makes an unusual botanical companion to the adult skipper plates.
This caterpillar plate has a centered composition, balanced borders and a continuous warm paper field. It pairs naturally with other plates in Scudder's series.
