On October 11, 1887, Alexander Miles received U.S. Patent 371,207 for an invention that would quietly reshape how millions of people moved through cities. His mechanism solved a problem that had plagued elevator operators for years: the dangerous gap between a closing car and an open shaft door. Before Miles's innovation, operators had to manually manage both sets of doors in sequence, creating moments of peril in those seconds between levels.

Miles's patent drawings reveal the elegant logic of a mechanical mind. Pulleys, levers, and linked operating parts orchestrate a dance of automation, each component precisely positioned to ensure that shaft doors and car doors open and close in perfect synchronization.
