He spent months experimenting with diatomaceous earth, a porous sediment, until he discovered that mixing it with liquid nitroglycerine created a paste that could be handled, transported, and detonated with unprecedented control.
On August 14, 1866, the U.S. Patent Office granted him Patent 57,175 for that breakthrough.
