On a December evening in 1919, Alice H. Parker received patent number 1,325,905 for an invention that would transform domestic comfort forever. Her gas-fired heating furnace with independently controlled units was radical: instead of a single blast of heat radiating through a home, Parker's system allowed different rooms, different floors, to have their own regulated temperature. It sounds obvious now. Then, it was genius.

Parker was working in an era when home heating meant choosing between freezing bedrooms and scorching living spaces, or stoking a coal furnace all night. Women, particularly, felt the cold most acutely—they spent their days at home while husbands worked in heated offices. The burden of managing an uneven, inefficient system fell to them. Parker saw the problem not as inevitable, but as solvable through engineering.
