Before the Safety Bicycle: The Velocipede Era
Bicycle Velocipede Patent Print c.1870
Before chain drives and pneumatic tires made cycling comfortable, the velocipede brought self-propelled travel into public view. Its pedals turned the front wheel directly, giving the rider a raw mechanical connection to the road.
Often remembered as the boneshaker, the early bicycle was both awkward and revolutionary. Patent drawings from this period show inventors working through frame geometry, wheel size, cranks, and steering at a moment when the bicycle was still being invented.
This restored print preserves that experimental energy: a technical drawing from the age when personal transportation was being reimagined one mechanism at a time.
