In 1904, Ernst Haeckel published Kunstformen der Natur, a landmark portfolio that would reshape how we see the living world. The German naturalist and philosopher had spent decades studying organisms invisible to the naked eye, then translating them into visual form with almost obsessive precision. His mission was radical: to prove that nature itself was the supreme artist, that even creatures too small for casual observation possessed geometric perfection worthy of contemplation.

The bryozoa, or "moss animals," captured Haeckel's imagination completely. These colonial marine creatures build intricate, branching structures from thousands of microscopic individuals working in concert. Viewing them under a microscope became a portal to architecture unknown: feathered crowns that spread like botanical fractals, circular chambers stacked in rings of rust and pale blue, protective cases that curled and spiraled with no earthly purpose except elegance.
