Darien and the Public Square
Darien Wisconsin 1907 Map Print
The title reads DARIEN, with DARIEN TWP. lettered beneath it and a scale bar below that. A rope-chain frame with scroll corners surrounds the sheet, and a thin rule rectangle encloses the whole map.
A railroad crosses the plan on a diagonal from the lower left to the upper right, with CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE and ST. PAUL lettered in separate places along it and a hatched building lettered DEPOT beside the tracks.
The town plan is made of numbered blocks cut into lots between lettered streets. On the north-west, WASHINGTON ST., JEFFERSON ST. and MADISON ST. cross CHURCH ST., and STONE is lettered across block 15 to the right of CHURCH, with ST. on the street at its right edge. Nearer the railroad, FREMONT, BELOIT and WISCONSIN are lettered as streets, MARKET ST. runs between the blocks of FREY'S ADD., and 1ST AVE., 2ND AVE. and 3RD AVE. are lettered on short cross streets.
Additions lettered on the plan include TOPPING'S ADD., FREY'S ADD., JOHN BRUCE ADD. and 4TH ADD., with PUBLIC SQUARE lettered along the diagonal road in the south half of the sheet. A hatched PUBLIC SCHOOL is lettered south-east of the square, and CEMETERY is lettered on a triangular plot at the left edge, in the upper left.
The open land around the plan carries handwritten owner names, among them F. Cusack, E. A. Brigham, D. A. Gilt, Jas. Barrett, M. Thorpe, John Garbutt and John Harwood, with two contour-lined shapes drawn below D. A. Gilt.
This print appears in faded sage on warm cream paper, with black lettering.
