In 1941, George de Mestral returned from a hunting trip in the Jura Mountains with his clothes covered in cockleburs. Rather than curse the nuisance, he examined one under a microscope and saw geometry: tiny hooks that had snagged the loops of his wool jacket. That observation would become an obsession, one that took him fourteen years to perfect into something manufacturable.

His solution arrived in 1955 as U.S. Patent 2,717,437: a velvet-type hook-and-loop fastener that mimicked nature's design but rendered it in woven textile form. One side featured miniature nylon hooks; the other, soft loops. Press them together and they held. Peel them apart and they were ready to fasten again. Infinitely reusable, aggressively humble.

The patent drawing itself is a marvel of industrial clarity. Magnified hundreds of times, the hooks and looped fibers become something almost abstract, stripped of their practical purpose and transformed into pure geometry. Straight lines, measured angles, the kind of technical drawing that appeals equally to engineers and those who simply love the clarity of a problem solved with elegance.

De Mestral's invention would eventually become ubiquitous under the brand name he created: a word that fused "velvet" and "crochet," though we know it most often as the everyday fastener that holds everything from children's shoes to space suits. Yet the patent drawing captures something the product itself has lost: the moment of discovery, the diagram of thinking.

This restored edition preserves that original Patent Office arrangement in crisp black linework on cool, timeworn rag paper, bordered by the collection's restrained black double rule.
