Reading Hartford: A City Mapped in Sage and Cream
Hartford Connecticut 1869 Map Print
The map speaks in layers. The Park River threads through the composition. Trinity College sits marked on the sheet, along with Cathedral Cemetery and Spring Grove Cemetery. Along the south runs the Connecticut River; the Hockanum River is lettered where it joins it. At the borders, four neighbouring towns are named: Wethersfield, West Hartford, East Hartford, and Windsor, anchoring Hartford within its region.
The city's numbered wards are lettered. Its districts are delineated. At the upper left, a separate inset details Cedar Hill Cemetery, complete with its own title and a printed notice.
The warm cream paper grounds the whole composition, making the black lettering jump forward. It's a palette that feels documentary and deliberate at once.
Holding this reproduction is like holding a conversation with Hartford's past: not a city frozen in amber, but a place as someone knew it in 1869, marked and measured and named.
