In 1892, most people still climbed stairs the old-fashioned way. But Jesse W. Reno, an American engineer with a restless mind, saw an opportunity in motion itself. On March 15th of that year, the U.S. Patent Office granted him Patent 470,918, for an inclined endless conveyor or elevator, a device that would eventually transform how we move through public space.

Reno's innovation was elegant: an inclined belt driven by linked mechanical sections, with a large wheel anchoring the system and chains distributing force along the frame. It wasn't the escalator as we know it today, but it was the conceptual ancestor. The drawing itself is a portrait of industrial logic, spare and commanding in its black linework, each component rendered with the precision of a man who understood that genius lives in the details.

This was the age of American ingenuity, when patent drawings doubled as technical poetry. Engineers filed these documents not just to claim their ideas, but to explain them to the world. Reno's drawing does exactly that, capturing a moment when someone looked at a problem, vertical transport in crowded spaces, and saw it not as inevitable but as solvable.
