Charting the Sunshine: Tampa Bay in 1968

Tampa Bay Nautical Chart, 1968

Tampa Bay Nautical Chart, 1968 -- Slimwood Silver, 48 x 36 framed, wall view

In 1968, Tampa Bay was transforming. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge had recently opened, stitching together the bay's fractured shoreline and reshaping how people moved through this corner of Florida. Surveyors and cartographers documented the moment with precision, mapping every channel, key, and sounding as the region shifted from sleepy Gulf outpost to modern maritime hub.

This coastal survey chart captures that pivotal year. It traces the southern reaches of Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg and Gulfport down through the main ship channel to Egmont Key at the mouth, where the Gulf of Mexico sprawls beyond. Boca Ciega Bay curves along the western edge, studded with the Pinellas Keys. The Manatee River snakes along the southern shore toward Bradenton. Three compass roses orient the viewer across the pale water, while warm land tones echo the original chart's understated elegance.

What makes this survey matter to us now is exactly what made it matter then: it is a record of place at a moment of change. The depths, the channels, the named features, the precise angles marked in degrees and minutes, all of it speaks to a world when knowing your coastline meant knowing the actual bottom, the actual hazards, the actual geography.

For coastal homes, offices, and collections of historic maps, this print brings that specific moment into the present. It is decorative historical artwork, yes, but it is also a small archive: a glimpse of how we once read water, and how one region looked at the threshold of its modern era.

Each reproduction is printed on heavyweight 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using giclée printing, a fine art technique that captures the subtle tonality and depth of the original coastal chart. The matte finish diffuses light and invites close looking, while archival materials ensure this print will endure for decades without fading or yellowing. Available in three sizes, with or without your choice of frame.
