In 1904, Ernst Haeckel sat in his laboratory and rendered the microscopic impossible. The German naturalist and artist had spent decades peering through lenses at creatures no human eye could see whole, and he became obsessed with translating their architecture into form. What emerged was Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, a portfolio that would remake how science and beauty could occupy the same frame.
Plate 2 captures Thalamophora kammerlinge, the foraminifera known to science as Globigerina. These are single-celled organisms that build shells from calcium carbonate, each chamber a perfect geometrical echo of the last. To see them was to see nature's blueprint; to draw them was to translate mathematics into wonder. Haeckel understood this. He wasn't simply documenting; he was revealing.
The lithographer Adolf Giltsch brought Haeckel's watercolors to stone, capturing the precise contours and delicate spirals that make these creatures architectural marvels.
