The Story Behind the Print

Tafel 55 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (1904), published in 1904, titled Acephala and captioned Muscheln. A group of bivalve shells appears against a deep black field in monochrome.

Ribbed fans, heart-shaped valves, scalloped edges and layered folds fill the plate. Across the top, shells appear from the side, edge-on and from the front, some fringed with spines or fine frills. In the middle row, two heart-shaped shells flank a view of the hinge, while a broad, pointed, ridged shell fills the centre and heavily ruffled, folded shells stand at either side. Two wide, ribbed valves lie along the bottom.

Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
