The Story Behind the Print
This vintage print of the Black or Surf Duck reproduces John James Audubon's illustration from Birds of America, plate 317, restored as historical wall art for studies, libraries, and natural history collections.
Two dark ducks occupy a rocky shore scattered with pale shells. The raised bird shows a bold white head patch, colorful bill, and red feet, while its lower companion has quieter brown plumage.
Archive Print Co. restores each illustration for clarity while preserving the character of the original. Each reproduction is printed as a giclée art print on heavyweight 325gsm archival matte paper with archival inks.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece; the print will always be richer in person.
About the Frame
Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
The selected size refers to the artwork itself. Framed orders are custom made and ship within 7 to 10 business days, free in the U.S. See our shipping and return policies for framed piece details.

“Just perfect! I adore it for my kitchen.”
“Wow! This is the second print I've purchased from Paola and couldn't be happier with the quality! It's printed on nice thick paper and the colors are really vibrant. I bought it as a gift and the recipient loves it. The packaging was nice as well - it came rolled up so it was protected during shipping but unrolled easily for the frame. Thank you!!”
