The Story Behind the Print
Comet over Winchester is H. R. Cook's 1820 engraving after a drawing by Pether. It records the Comet of 1811 at daybreak over Otterbourne Hill, where two figures watch the bright object above the distant city.
The complete sheet preserves the engraved scene, artist and engraver lines, title, observational subtitle and publication line. Dense horizontal strokes give the early morning sky its texture while the comet remains sharply luminous above the horizon. Its printed details remain clear across the complete historical composition and surrounding annotations.
Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
