The Story Behind the Print

Tafel 60 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (1904), published in 1904, titled Echinidea and captioned Igelsterne. The plate is printed in black and white, with sea urchin shells drawn in pale tones on a solid black ground.

A large spined sea urchin with long, banded spines and a fringe of slender tube feet sits at the centre. Around it are the parts of its shell: round plates with star-shaped and dotted patterns at the top corners, small jaw-like pieces between them, a long spine at the left, a flared, club-shaped spine at the right, and a rounded plate, a bell-shaped piece and a ring of fine teeth along the bottom.

Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.

Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.

The selected size refers to the artwork itself. Framed orders are custom made and ship within 7 to 10 business days, free in the U.S. See our shipping and return policies for framed piece details.
