The Story Behind the Print
Historic Comets is an 1860 astronomy plate published in London by James Reynolds. Five comet forms cross a starry landscape, pairing dramatic tails with printed names and a small orbital diagram beneath the central image.
The complete plate retains the named comets of 1680, 1811, 1741, 1835 and 1858, the landscape, explanatory text, orbital diagram and publisher line. The varied tails make the sheet both descriptive and visually theatrical. Its printed details remain clear across the complete historical composition and surrounding annotations.
Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
