The Story Behind the Print
This 1966 nautical chart of Port Royal Sound and its inland passages is U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 571, at 1:40,000 with soundings in feet. Stone-grey sea islands are threaded with pale tidal creeks and stippled marsh, the sound opens as a broad white channel, and soft blue-grey shoals fan out to sea.
Lettered on the sheet are Beaufort, Port Royal, Bluffton and Burton, with Port Royal Sound, Calibogue Sound and the Broad, Beaufort, Chechessee and Colleton rivers. Hilton Head, Parris, St. Helena, Spring, Daws and Daufuskie islands line the water, with Gaskin Banks and Martins Industry offshore. Notes across the shoals date the hydrography to surveys of 1920 and 1931, and a table gives channel depths for the sound and the Beaufort River.
