The Story Behind the Print
This restored vintage map of South America captures the continent as understood through the lens of early 20th century cartography, when modern surveying techniques were finally revealing the true scope and detail of South American geography. Created during an era of scientific exploration and territorial consolidation, this map reflects a period when many of the continent's borders were still being defined and remote regions were just beginning to appear on official charts.
The careful line work and typography showcase the meticulous craft of professional cartographers working in an age before satellite imagery, when every mountain range and river system had to be painstakingly surveyed and documented. Notice how the political boundaries reflect the geopolitical realities of the early 1900s—some quite different from today's South America.
Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using giclée printing with archival inks that resist fading for generations. Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
About the Frame
Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
