The Story Behind the Print
Orville and Wilbur Wright's U.S. Patent 821,393, granted May 22, 1906, documents their Flying-Machine and its system of aerodynamic control. Filed in 1903, the patent centers on controlling the machine through coordinated changes to the wing surfaces rather than simply producing lift.
The sheet is headed O. & W. Wright, Flying Machine, and marked sheet 1 of 3. Fig. 1 is a single large view of the machine, a long lattice of struts and crossed wires, with small vertical surfaces and their supports at one side and dashed lines showing a changed position of the wing at the other. Numerals label the parts, and both inventors sign.

About the Frame
