Charter Oak and the Soldier River

Charter Oak Iowa 1908 Map Print

Charter Oak Iowa 1908 Map Print -- Slimwood Silver, 20 x 24 inches framed, wall view

The title reads CHARTER OAK, with CHARTER OAK, a small sunburst mark and TWP. lettered beneath it and a scale line below that reading 300 ft. = 1 inch. A rope-chain frame surrounds the sheet.

North of the railroad, a plat lettered NORTH CHARTER OAK, spelled out in large letters on a diagonal, holds numbered blocks between FIFTH, FOURTH and THIRD streets, with BLANCHE and FLORA lettered on its side streets and a block lettered PARK 10 in its left half. A street lettered HARRIS runs below the plat at its left.

The main town plan lies below the railroad in numbered blocks cut into lots, between lettered streets that include FIRST, SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH. A large block in its south part is lettered SCHOOL 5 LOT. HARRISON'S is spelled out in large letters at the left of the south blocks, with TO CHARTER OAK and ADD. lettered across the blocks to its right. MILWAUKEE LAND CO.'S TO CHARTER OAK is spelled out on a long diagonal on the east side, with 1st. ADD. lettered above it. A narrow strip at the west edge of the plan is lettered JONE'S TO CHARTER OAK ADD, with a round SECTION CORNER stamp at its south end. Church, M.E. Church, Hotel, City Hall and Livery are lettered among the blocks.

Along the top of the town the railroad is drawn as a double line lettered CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE & ST PAUL R.R., with a Depot lettered beside it. Below the line, Green Bay Lumber Yard, Elevator, Coal, Ice and a second Elevator are each lettered beside a small hatched building, and RAILWAY is lettered along the top of the west blocks. SOLDIER RIVER is lettered on the winding river in the upper part of the sheet, and a round stamp lettered CENTER and SECTION around the number 23 sits near the right edge.

The open land around the town carries handwritten owner names: Sylvester L. Jones 320 along the top left, Lydia H Jones below it, M. J. Jacobs and Jno. Torrey left of the Soldier River, F. W. Pithan above the railroad, H. C. Baak below the north plat, William Lensar near the right edge, F. L. Vogt at the lower left and F. Waddington 52.50 ac below the town.

This print appears in faded sage on warm cream paper, with black lettering.
