In 1873, a De Kalb, Illinois farmer named Joseph F. Glidden stood in his field watching livestock destroy his crops. The problem was simple, ancient, and urgent: how to contain cattle on the open prairie without stone walls or wooden rails, both expensive and scarce in the plains. The solution he sketched that year would reshape the American West.

On November 24, 1874, Glidden received patent number 157124. The mechanism was elegant in its economy: barbs twisted onto wire at regular intervals, creating a fence that was cheap to manufacture, easy to transport, and brutally effective. Within a decade, barbed wire had enclosed millions of acres. Cowboys, ranchers, and settlers suddenly possessed an affordable boundary. Ranchers could separate herds. Farmers could protect fields. The Great Plains transformed from open range to parceled land.

What strikes us now, more than 150 years later, is how the patent drawing itself becomes almost abstract when enlarged.
