In 1898, when most inventors were still tethered to their machines by copper wire and mechanical linkage, Nikola Tesla filed a patent that seemed to defy logic. U.S. Patent 613,809, granted November 8th that year, proposed something radical: a vessel steered by invisible radio signals, its rudder and motors obeying commands from miles away. No operator aboard. No human touch. Just electromagnetic will made manifest.

Tesla had spent the 1890s consumed by wireless transmission, conducting experiments in his lab while the world debated his sanity. Radio was still theoretical, barely understood. Yet here he was, describing a top-down schematic of a compact hull bristling with batteries, motors, relays, and steering gear—a mechanical brain waiting for distant instruction. He called it a method for controlling moving vessels. We would come to call it remote control.

The patent drawings themselves are models of clarity: measured technical compositions rendered in precise black linework, every component labeled, every relay positioned with intention. They belong to that brief historical moment when engineering drawings were also acts of faith—when a sketch on paper could represent not just what was, but what might someday be possible.
