In 1914, the year Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated and the world lurched toward war, a quiet physics professor in Worcester, Massachusetts filed a patent for something that existed only in calculation and ink. Robert H. Goddard had sketched a multi-stage rocket, complete with propellant chambers, nozzles, and a sequencing system designed to achieve what seemed impossible: sustained altitude and efficiency beyond anything science had yet accomplished.
Patent 1,102,653, granted on July 7, 1914, reads like a technical whisper from another world. The drawing itself is almost austere in its clarity, the tall rocket sections rendered in crisp black linework with each internal component methodically labeled. There's a spare, visionary geometry to the sheet, as if Goddard had distilled the entire dream of spaceflight down to its essential blueprint.
What makes this document remarkable is the moment it captures. Goddard was working in profound isolation, years before the Soviet space program, before NASA, before Cold War ambitions turned rocketry into a race.
