In 1868, three inventors in Milwaukee patented something that would quietly reshape how humans record thought. Patent 79,265, granted to C. L. Sholes, C. Glidden, and S. W. Soule on June 23 that year, documented an "Improvement in Type-Writing Machines." What they were really patenting was the future of work itself.

The 1860s were a restless decade for mechanical innovation. The Civil War had ended just three years earlier, and America was hungry to reinvent. The telegraph had already shown that electricity could carry messages across distance; now inventors wondered: could a machine do for handwriting what the printing press had done for books? Could one person type faster than they could write by hand?

The patent drawing itself is a marvel of clarity. Its plan views, elevations, and mechanical figures transform what was still a complicated contraption into something almost beautiful on the page. You can trace the logic of every lever and type bar, see how paper feeds forward, understand the geometry of a key press becoming a letter. This wasn't the first typewriter design, but it was one of the early ones that actually worked reliably. The Sholes and Glidden machine, as it became known, would evolve into what Remington manufactured and marketed as the first commercially successful typewriter.
