The Story Behind the Print

U.S. Patent 79,265, granted June 23, 1868 to C. L. Sholes, C. Glidden, and S. W. Soule, records an early Improvement in Type-Writing Machines. The sheet is headed Sholes, Glidden & Soule, Type Writing Mach., and is marked sheet 1 of 2 sheets.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the machine: a boxy case with a circular wheel of characters at its centre, a long bar across the top and a row of keys at the right side. Fig. 2 is a plan detail of a toothed rack and carriage bar, and Fig. 3 a vertical detail with a lever, with a small round detail at the upper right. Letters label the parts, and the three inventors sign.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
