In 1899, William D. Middlebrook of Oakville, Connecticut, was granted a patent for something so mundane, so perfectly ordinary, that we forget it had to be invented at all. Patent 636,272, filed that November, describes a machine for making wire paper clips, and in its intricate arrangement of gears, cams, shafts, and bending stations lies a story about American ingenuity at the turn of the century.
The late 1800s were the age of the office. Filing systems, carbon paper, and standardized correspondence had transformed commercial work into something systematic and bound. Papers multiplied. They needed to be gathered, organized, held together. The pin and fastener were already old ideas; what Middlebrook recognized was that the problem demanded mechanical efficiency. Why bend wire by hand when a machine could do it faster, more uniformly, endlessly?
