The Story Behind the Print
Aurora Borealis is a hand-colored 1846 wood engraving attributed to Whymper. A reindeer-drawn sledge crosses a frozen northern landscape beneath a sweeping arc of light, while small stars punctuate the dark sky above distant mountains.
The complete image includes the softly rounded engraving edge and its printed title. Fine hatch marks define the auroral rays, ice, water, rocks and figures, while restrained hand color picks out the harness, sledge and reindeer. Its printed details remain clear across the complete historical composition and surrounding annotations.
Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
