The Story Behind the Print

This 1966 nautical chart of Hampton Roads, Virginia, is U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 400, drawn on a Mercator projection at 1:20,000 with soundings in feet at mean low water. Khaki-taupe land etched with city street grids meets pale blue shallows and broad white channels.

Lettered on the sheet are Newport News, Hampton, Phoebus, Old Point Comfort, Fort Monroe, Fort Wool, Willoughby Spit, Ocean View, Norfolk and Craney I., with Hampton Roads, James River, Nansemond River, Hampton River, Lafayette River, Willoughby Bay and Thimble Shoal. A key to anchorage areas covers quarantine, naval, explosives and yachting anchorages, and tables give controlling channel depths for Norfolk Harbor, Newport News, Hampton and Phoebus.

Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, ensuring your vintage nautical chart will maintain its maritime heritage for generations.

Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
