The Story Behind the Print
This 1957 nautical chart of the western part of Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, is U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 1231, drawn at 1:80,000 with soundings in feet at mean low water. Stone-taupe land frays into sage marsh along every creek, while pale blue shoals edge the white open sound out to the thin barrier islands.
Lettered on the sheet are Belhaven, Pantego, Leechville, Scranton, Ocracoke and Portsmouth, with Swanquarter Island, Judith Island, Ocracoke Island and Portsmouth Island, the Pamlico and Pungo Rivers, Rose Bay, Core Sound, Bluff Shoal, Royal Shoal and Ocracoke Inlet, plus insets of the Alligator River and the Bay River. A note warns that the Ocracoke Inlet channel shifts so often its entrance buoys are left off the chart.
