The Story Behind the Print
This 1958 nautical chart of Penobscot Bay and Approaches, Maine, is U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart 1203, drawn on a Mercator projection at 1:80,000 with soundings in feet at mean low water. Stone-taupe islands and ragged peninsulas, hatched with road lines and contours, crowd a white bay finely stippled with shoals and marked by grey compass roses.
Lettered on the sheet are Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Thomaston, Searsport, Castine, Waldoboro and Stonington, with Rockport Harbor, Eggemoggin Reach, Hurricane Sound, Muscle Ridge and the Gulf of Maine. North Haven, Vinalhaven, Islesboro, Deer Isle, Little Deer Isle, Owls Head, Cape Rosier, Matinicus I. and Monhegan I. fill the bay and its approaches. A tidal table lists Vinalhaven, Castine, Belfast, Rockland and Port Clyde, and a note marks a naval trial course between latitudes 44°01' and 44°08'.
Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, ensuring your vintage nautical chart will maintain its maritime heritage for generations.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.
