The Story Behind the Print

Peromedusae Täfelchenquallen Haeckel Scientific Chart Print

This Peromedusae Täfelchenquallen scientific chart print is a museum quality reproduction of Ernst Haeckel's 1904 naturalistic study of jellyfish taxonomy from Kunstformen der Natur. The composition displays eight numbered specimens arranged across a cream ground, each rendered with meticulous anatomical precision and hand-colored detail.

The central focus is a large symmetrical jellyfish viewed from above, its disk radiant with concentric rings of burgundy and pale pink, edged with translucent pale blue lobes. Golden oral filaments radiate inward from a pale green cross at its core. Around this anchor specimen, articulated dark purple-brown tentacles twist and coil with organic grace. Above, three smaller views show bell-form variations: a pale quad-lobed form in tan and cream, a compact orchid-toned medusa with golden oral structures, and a turquoise-rimmed specimen with intricate radial symmetry. Below, two additional bell-form views in pale blue and cream display the complete hanging tentacular apparatus, with cross-sectional detail inset showing internal anatomy. Fine pen linework throughout documents every ridge, sucker, and anatomical feature.

The cream ground and naturalist palette—cream, pale blue, tan, burgundy, golden ochre, and muted purple—give this specimen chart timeless elegance. It works beautifully in studies, libraries, naturalist galleries, marine research offices, educational spaces, and rooms celebrating historic scientific illustration and natural history.
