The Story Behind the Print

Tafel 71 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (1904), published in 1904, titled Stephoidea and captioned Ringelstrahlinge. White skeletal forms and touches of pink, ochre and yellow stand out against a black ground.

Radiolarians are built from rings, lattices and radiating spines. Two large figures carry spiny, branching skeletons with a pink living cell at the centre ringed by tiny yellow dots. A round lattice sphere sits in the middle of the plate, and around it are ring-shaped skeletons with paired loops and cage-like forms, each numbered at the edge of the picture.

Printed on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper using fade-resistant giclée printing with archival inks, preserving the detail and character of the original for generations.

Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece — the print will always be richer.

About the Frame

Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.

The selected size refers to the artwork itself. Framed orders are custom made and ship within 7 to 10 business days, free in the U.S. See our shipping and return policies for framed piece details.
