Vintage German Moon Map, 1842 Johann Gehler Lunar Print
This vintage lunar print is a fine art quality reproduction of an 1842 German map of the moon, originally drawn and hand colored by Johann Gehler. It records the lunar surface with careful, methodical observation, showing craters, seas, and regions in a way that feels both scientific and quietly poetic. The weathered character of the original sheet gives the piece an old world presence that feels at home in spaces that value knowledge, observation, and history.
Rather than a decorative fantasy, this is a working astronomical image from the nineteenth century. It invites close study of the moon’s surface and rewards repeated viewing, whether you are drawn to astronomy, early scientific printing, or simply the calm of detailed linework on paper.
Premium Archival Quality
Each print is produced on heavyweight museum grade matte paper to preserve fine linework, subtle tone, and the character of the original German sheet. High resolution restoration ensures that the labels, contours, and surface details remain crisp and legible over time, even at larger sizes.
A Thoughtful Gift
This lunar print makes a considered gift for astronomy enthusiasts, science and history lovers, educators, or anyone who prefers celestial art with real historical depth behind it. It works well for birthdays, housewarmings, graduations, or as a distinctive addition to a study, office, library, or studio.
Color and Detail Note
Colors and tones may vary slightly due to differences in screen settings. Each print is created from high resolution source imagery to ensure accurate reproduction and clear, detailed rendering of the original work.
