The Story Behind the Print
Jan E. Matzeliger’s U.S. Patent 274,207, granted March 20, 1883, documents Jan Matzeliger’s lasting machine and the coordinated grippers, supports, and mechanical motions used to shape a shoe upper over its last.
The towering machine elevation and component studies create a powerful portrait of industrial shoemaking. This restored edition preserves the original Patent Office arrangement in crisp black linework on cool, timeworn rag paper within the collection’s restrained black double rule.
Printed to order on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper with fade-resistant archival pigment inks. A natural piece for offices, libraries, workshops, and collections of invention and industrial design.

About the Frame
Framed pieces are built to order in solid wood with clear acrylic glazing, dry-mounted artwork, a kraft paper dust cover, and hanging wire. Each piece arrives ready to hang. No mat. Satin Black has a 7/8-inch face and adds 1.25 inches to the total width and height. Slimwood Silver and Slimwood Gold have a 1 1/8-inch face and add 1.75 inches to the total width and height.
