The Story Behind the Print
Joseph R. Winters’s U.S. Patent 203,517, granted May 7, 1878, describes Joseph R. Winters’s fire-escape ladder, mounted on a wagon and raised through a compact system of frames, shafts, gearing, and chains.
The elevated scissor ladder, wagon gear, and front mechanism form a dramatic piece of nineteenth-century firefighting engineering. This restored edition preserves the original Patent Office arrangement in crisp black linework on cool, timeworn rag paper within the collection’s restrained black double rule.
Printed to order on 325gsm museum-grade archival matte paper with fade-resistant archival pigment inks. A natural piece for offices, libraries, workshops, and collections of invention and industrial design.
Colors may vary slightly between screens and the finished piece—the print will always be richer.
